description

Summary

Garmsir elders listen to District Governor Mohammad Fahim speak during a shura with Afghan leaders and U.S. Marines with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, here, Feb. 23. Fahim asked the elders for help in growing the Afghan Local Police program, and urged them to cease illicit poppy growth in their villages. In response to their requests for school, clinic and road construction, Fahim implored the elders to support Afghan-led security efforts. “The most important thing we need in Garmsir is security,” Fahim said. “Without it, we won’t be able to complete these development projects.” Several key Afghan military leaders also spoke during the shura, including Afghan National Army Lt. Col. Haji Mohammad, the commanding officer of Garmsir’s newest ANA battalion — 6th Kandak, 1st Brigade, 215th Corps. Mohammad spoke about his kandak’s success in securing neighboring Marjah district and shared his intent for achieving the same Afghan-led security in Garmsir.

NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year. There are approximately 10 billion pages of textual records; 12 million maps, charts, and architectural and engineering drawings; 25 million still photographs and graphics; 24 million aerial photographs; 300,000 reels of motion picture film; 400,000 video and sound recordings; and 133 terabytes of electronic data. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
