Summary
Geochemist Donald Thomas, right, director of the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes at the University of Hawaii, drills holes deep into this volcano for information. With veteran wireline drilling supervisor Ron Fierbach, they examine volcanic core samples. The cores have yielded important clues that help explain the totally unexpected behavior of water beneath the surface of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Their discovery of significant water pockets could some day supply the Army's Pohakuloa Training Area nearby, which has to truck in all its water. Photo: Eric Haskins
