Summary
Jim Hickerson, a former POW, rings America's Bell of Freedom with assistance from Sgt. Maj. Joaquin Andujar, senior enlisted leader, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), during a National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii, Sept. 19, 2019. First established in 1979 through a proclamation from President Jimmy Carter, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is an observance to honor and recognize the sacrifices of those Americans who have been a POW, and to remind the nation of those who are still MIA. DPAA is conducting worldwide operations to provide the fullest possible accounting of those classified as still missing. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Jacqueline A. Clifford)
