Summary

Lance Cpl. Raymond D. Javier, right center, and Lance Cpl. Samuel C. Allison, far right, explain American acronyms to Okinawa residents during an English class Nov. 5 at the Aeon Rycom Mall in Chatan, Okinawa, Japan. The class provided Okinawa students with an opportunity to interact and improve their English through conversation with native English speakers. During the class, SOFA members played word games with Okinawa residents and explained various cultural references and vernacular. After the classroom activities, SOFA volunteers and students divided into groups, ate lunch and shopped together before returning to the classroom to discuss what they had learned. Marine Corps Installations Pacific strengthens relationships with our allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region; enables the strategic launch and recovery of military capabilities to save lives and to preserve regional peace, stability and security; and enables operating force readiness to guarantee victory. Javier is an intelligence specialist with G-2, intelligence, Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force and a Manchester, New Jersey, native. Allison is a cannoneer with 3rd Battalion 12th Marine Regiment; currently assigned to 1st Battalion 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force and a Farmington, Minnesota, native.

The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year. There are approximately 10 billion pages of textual records; 12 million maps, charts, and architectural and engineering drawings; 25 million still photographs and graphics; 24 million aerial photographs; 300,000 reels of motion picture film; 400,000 video and sound recordings; and 133 terabytes of electronic data. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
