PJ sheds light on multifaceted pararescue mission in Afghanistan
Summary
Staff Sgt. Matthew Zimmer, a pararescueman with the 103rd Rescue Squadron and Matawan, N.J., native, details the myriad duties he and his fellow pararescuemen, or “PJ’s,” undertake on any given day aboard Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, Feb. 15. The small contingent of emergency trauma-trained airmen perform casualty evacuations and valuable gear recovery across Helmand province. Zimmer explained that pararescuemen are qualified to extract personnel and equipment by means of fast roping, parachuting, diving and mountain climbing, making them an extremely flexible asset in the harsh Afghanistan environment.
