Summary
Rct. Nyisha Porter, an 18-year-old Atlanta native, is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Porter is training with Platoon 4038, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Nov. 15, 2013. "I've been homeless since I was 17, and the last shelter I went to I met a Marine who told me about his time [in the Marine Corps], and I decided it might be a good idea to talk to a recruiter. I joined to adequately take care of myself and to be a productive member of society," said Porter. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
