Rct. Valery Mokom Asanga, Platoon 3010, right, attacks Rct. Jeffrey Roberts II, Platoon 3014, Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, during pugil stick training Dec, 15, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits fight using pugil sticks, which represent rifles with fixed bayonets, to simulate a close encounter with an enemy. Mokom Asanga, 23, originally from Cameroon, Africa, before moving to Martinsburg, W.Va., and Roberts, 19, from Gainesville, Fla., are scheduled to graduate Feb. 27, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
