Recruits of Echo Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, swim 25 meters during basic water survival training Feb. 22, 2016, on Parris Island, S.C. Water survival qualification, the first of seven graduation requirements, includes swimming 25 meters, leaping into the water from a 10-foot tower, treading water for four minutes and shedding combat equipment underwater. Echo Company is scheduled to graduate April 22, 2016. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
