Description: Earth observations below vertical tail and orbital maneuvering system (OMS) pods and shadowed payload bay (PLB) with remote manipulator system (RMS) stowed on port side sill longeron include: Venezuela, Clouds, Rio Apure. PLB experiments include (front to back) Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS) 01, Materials Experiment Assembly (MEA) mounted on Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications (OSTA) 2 Mission Peculiar Equipment Support System (MPESS), and spacecraft sunshield closed over thermal-covered airborne support equipment (ASE). Get away special (GAS) canisters mounted on port side longeron appear in foreground. GAS canister lid is open on G305 - Space Ultraviolet Radiation Environment (SURE) instrument developed by the Naval Research Laboratory.
