Summary

Sargento de Infanteria Marina Colombiano (Colombian Marine Sgt.) Julio Gloria Alvarez, a United States Colombian Action Plan training team member (left), supervises a training exercise with Honduran Marines during a USCAP boat operations course in Puerto Castilla, Honduras, Aug. 13, 2019. The USCAP team is performing boat operations to train local Honduran Marines how to operate boats safely. USCAP is an effort to respond to insecurity generated by transnational organized crime. The training event was part of a deployment evolution led by Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Southern Command, made of approximately 300 U.S. Marines and Sailors from various units spread across the United States and a multinational staff that includes partner nation service members from Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Belize and Dominican Republic. The task force’s mission is to work with partner nations to build security force capabilities in Latin America and the Caribbean through recurrent training events. It is also trained and equipped to provide timely responses to natural disasters and other crisis situations in the region. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Stanley Moy)

The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year. There are approximately 10 billion pages of textual records; 12 million maps, charts, and architectural and engineering drawings; 25 million still photographs and graphics; 24 million aerial photographs; 300,000 reels of motion picture film; 400,000 video and sound recordings; and 133 terabytes of electronic data. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
