Summary
Sgt. Michael Martinez, a range safety officer with Range Company, Weapons and Field Training Battalion, stands before the flag pole atop Fort Sumter near Charleston, S.C., for his re-enlistment ceremony Feb. 21, 2014. Along with traveling around the city to see Fort Sumter and its related historic sites during a military education trip, the Marines of Range Company witnessed Martinez, a 27-year-old native of Challis, Idaho, pledge to serve in the Marine Corps for several more years. The trip was part of the unit’s professional military education program, which aims to expand the Marines’ knowledge and skill outside their primary occupational specialties. Fort Sumter is best known as the site of the first military engagement of the Civil War on April 12, 1861.
