Staff from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District’s Colorado River Locks provided a tour of the lock facilities to Sam Houston High School’s (Arlington ISD) Earth and Science Club as part of a Gulf Coast spring break excursion. Lockmaster Simon DeSoto (far left) discussed the history, purpose and operations of the locks and their value to the nation, in addition to providing water safety information to the students. Corps in the Classroom pairs Army personnel and civil engineers with students to provide opportunities for students to learn about the engineering and science career fields, educate the community about the Corps’ mission and highlight the district’s contributions to the community, state and nation.
