Description: Photographic documentation of STS-62 Mission Specialists Pierre Thuot and Marsha Ivins working at Dexterous End Effector (DEE) controls on the Space Shuttle Columbia's aft flight deck. The DEE is a device on the business end of the Remote Manipulator System's (RMS's) robotic arm, which enables the RMS to grapple and secure objects. The purpose of the experiment conducted on STS-62 was to improve the dexterity and alignment accuracy of the shuttle's RMS by adding an improved end effector and grapple fixture to the robotic arm.
