The Presidential Wreath from the serving occupant of the White House placed at the gravesite of President Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States on the 231st Anniversary of his birth on Dec. 5, 2013. Nicknamed "Old Kinderhook" Van Buren was born in this Hudson Valley village and lived out the last days of his life here. A ceremony held on on Dec. 5, 2013 marked his 231st brithday. Shields presented a wreath from President Barack Obama at the grave of the eighth president. Local officials representing the Village of Kinderhook, the National Park Service, and local groups also presented wreaths honoring Van Buren.(Eric Durr, NYS Division of Military and Naval Affairs.)
