U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Oscar Zana Martinez, the Headquarters and Support Battalion, Bravo Company Single Marine Program (SMP) representative, with G-6 Data Systems Branch, shares his experience as the company representative for service members on Camp Foster, June 19, 2020.
Zana Martinez is one of many who volunteer with the SMP, helping service members and the local community. The SMP provides multiple support programs to enhance the quality of life (QOL) for Marines and sailors across Marine Corps bases.
“Every SMP representative is different and has their own passions,” said Zana Martinez. “I want to bring a positive light to the Marine Corps, and I feel like that was my biggest drive to push me towards becoming the Bravo Company representative.”
With protective measures in place because of COVID-19, the SMP center and volunteers work hard to organize social distancing events and keep the Marines and sailors equipped with different QOL programs. Within the SMP center, there is a recreational room, gaming room, kitchen, movie room, and different relaxation areas.
“I love to volunteer and give my time to the community,” he said. “At the end of the day, as a Marine volunteering in Okinawa, you can have a positive impact on the military and local community. Volunteering is a way to give back and that's why I love doing it.”
The center continues to host base cleanups and virtual gaming competitions. In response to Health Production Condition B’s new reduced restrictions, the center plans to host a variety of outdoor events in compliance with the new order.
The mission statement of the Single Marine Program is to contribute to the improvement of total force readiness, job performance, and retention by supporting the enhancement of Quality of Life for all single Marines, including unaccompanied Marines.
