Summary
U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia, senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, toured the Detention Facility in Parwan, July 2, 2012, to gain a better understanding of the strategic-level mission performed at the DFIP. As the senior non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Armed Forces, Battaglia serves as the principal military adviser to the CJCS and the Secretary of Defense on all matters involving joint and combined total force integration, utilization, health of the force and joint development for enlisted personnel. The tour was guided by U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Dawn Rippelmeyer, senior enlisted adviser to the commander, Task Force Protector. Task Force Protector personnel oversee the secure, humane care, custody and control of the detainees within the facility. In this photo, Rippelmeyer (left) and Battaglia receive a brief on the in-processing procedures at the DFIP. Excerpts from the Afghan Constitution pertaining to detained persons, as well as the Geneva Conventions Common Article 3, International Humanitarian Law, are read to each new arrival in the detainee’s own language.
