U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Melanye Martinez, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), rings America's Freedom Bell with assistance from Sgt. Maj. Joaquin Andujar, agency senior enlisted leader, during a National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony, hosted by DPAA at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii, Sept. 20, 2019. First established in 1979, through a proclamation from President Jimmy Carter, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is an observance to honor and recognize the sacrifices of those Americans who have been a POW and to remind the nation of those who are still MIA.
