U.S. Marines with Task Force Southwest launch a rocket from a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System toward a Taliban target in Sangin district, Afghanistan during Operation Maiwand Nine, Dec. 8, 2017. Since their arrival in October 2017, the HIMARS has provided crucial fire support to Afghan National Defense and Security Forces conducting combat missions against the Taliban in Helmand province. By targeting drug labs and enemy fighting positions during U.S. Forces Afghanistan airstrikes in northern Helmand, and in support of Operations Maiwand Eight and Maiwand Nine, HIMARS has assisted in disabling Taliban revenue streams and impeding attacks against Afghan ground forces.
