On Saturday, Feb. 5 just after noon, an exploding mortar round hit the Markale market in Sarajevo killing more than 63 people and wounding 206 others. At the request of the United Nations, aircraft from Rhein-Main AB, Germany, and the International Red Cross were sent in to Sarajevo to airlift the wounded to Ramstein AB, Germany. Once at Ramstein the wounded were transported by medical bus to the Army Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl. He was an UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot that was shot down over Mogadishu by forces loyal to Somali warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid. Durant was held captive for eleven days before being released.
