Airplanes - Flight - First photograph to be released of the first Liberty Motor to fly. Now that the censorship has been released this photo shows the first aeroplane to be equipped with a Liberty Motor in flight. The late Col. Roosevelt made a flight in this machine. It was on August 21, 1917 that this plane with a Liberty Motor climbed 7,000 feet in 10 minutes and reached its maximum altitude of 19,000 feet in forty-one minutes. The speed developed was faster than that of the Nieuport Scout, on eof the leading European planes at that time

The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.
