US Navy (USN) Landing Craft Utility (LCU) 1656 departs for New Orleans, Louisiana (LA), from the well deck of the USN Wasp Class Amphibious Assault Ship USS BATAAN (LHD 5), loaded with sand bags, water, a small flat-bottom boat, 300 lifejackets, a High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), and supplies to last 10 days. The USN tasked the BATAAN as the Maritime Disaster Relief Coordinator for naval rescue and relief operations in the region. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
