CPT Mike G. "Hatchet" Harmon shouts over the racket of landing jets to Navy LT Chris Bolt, a landing signal officer. LT Bolt stands at the stern of the ship, guiding and grading pilots who are coming in for a landing. Harmon, an Air Force exchange pilot with the U.S. Marines, is on a six-month Mediterranean tour and is flying F-18 Hornet missions off the deck of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), a Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
