Shown is a close-up of the uneven runway at Roberts International Airport, located outsi of Monrovia, Liberia. The runway has uneven concrete patchwork, that could possibly be a hazard for aircraft landing at the airport. The patchwork was laid on the runway after the original portion was torn out by government officials, because it was feared the runway was mined with land mines. The runway is two miles long and is being used by United States Air Force C-130E Hercules aircraft from the 86th Air Wing out of Ramstein Air Base, Germany, for Operation ASSURED LIFT. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
