An unidentified Sea Lion trainer from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR), San Diego, California (CA), works on hand signal commands with Zak, a 375-pound California Sea Lion, during a harbor patrol-training mission conducted for the Shallow Water Intruder Detection System (SWIDS) program. The Sea Lion has been trained to locate swimmers near piers, ships, and other objects in the water considered suspicious and a possible threat to military forces in the area. The SWIDS program has been deployed as part of the continued effort to support missions under Operation ENDURING FREEDOM

A 375-pound California Sea Lion referred to as Zak shows his teeth, before he participates in a training swim, during the Shallow Water Intruder Detection System (SWIDS) program, for the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.
