A tour at Ali Al Salem Air Base, nicknamed the "Rock", is a bonding experience, and nearly everyone who deploys comes home with a picture of the base's namesake trademark, "The Rock". The rock is home of the 9th Air Expeditionary Group made up of over 1500 people and sits just 39 miles from the Iraq border. This photo is part of the "On the Borderline" story in the July 1999, AIRMAN Magazine. The article describes life at the "Rock" and how it's mission and personnel have increased since the end of the Persian Gulf War under OPERATION SOUTHERN WATCH
