S36-74-023 - STS-036 - Cape Shipunskiy, Kamchatka Peninsula, CIS taken during STS-36

description

Summary

The original finding aid described this as:

Description: Once the scene of violent volcanic activity, the Kamchatka Peninsula in the northeast CIS, is now a frozen landscape most of the year. Cape Shipunskiy, Kamchatka Peninsula, CIS (53.0N, 160.0E), even under the thick layer of snow and ice, reveals many extinct volcanoes as typical caldera and lava flow patterns on the surface. The deep blue color of the Pacific is typical of near freezing sea water as filamentous ice flows from thawing sea ice. Image 025 was selected by the Public Affairs Office (PAO) for public release.
