Atkins was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for actions while serving with Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, in Abu Sarnak, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, on June 1, 2007. His extraordinary heroism in attempting to subdue a suicide bomber and shielding three Soldiers from the imminent explosion resulted in him being mortally wounded and saving the Soldiers.
