Dubbed "The Golden 13", he was one of the Navys first 13 African-American officers. Mr. White, 79, served in the Navy from 1943-1946, earning the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG). Following his commission at Naval Training Station, Great Lakes in 1944, he served as a Public Affairs Officer (PAO) at both Ninth Naval District and in Washington, D.C. A 1937 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, White served as an Illinois Appellate Court Judge in the last years of his career. He returned to Great Lakes several times including for the dedication of the Golden 13 Recruit In-processing Center, June 5, 1987, and for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Golden 13s commissioning in 1994. He passed away on February 16, 2004 in Chicago.
