Lance Cpl. Benjamin Nalls, a fire team leader with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, salutes Major Gen. Ronald Bailey, commanding general of 1st Marine Division, during his award ceremony here, March 8, 2013. Nalls received this medal for saving the life of Sgt. Erick Gutierrez, a squad leader with 1st LAR, during a resupply mission in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Gutierrez had fallen into a 9-foot-deep, 15-foot-wide canal, and because of the strong current unable to get out. Nalls jumped into the frigid water and was able to pull Gutierrez to the riverbank.
