Summary
Memorial Bridge spans the St. Johns River and connects Palatka to East Palatka, Florida. The role of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Upper St. Johns River Basin extends approximately over 2,000 square miles. The Atlantic Coastal Ridge bounds it to the east and the Kissimmee River Basin to the west. The St. Johns River flows from its Upper headwaters near Vero Beach 310 miles north to Jacksonville and into the Atlantic Ocean. The entire river basin includes parts of eight Florida counties. The focus of the Upper Basin project area is in Okeechobee, Brevard, Indian River, and Osceola Counties. This project’s system of canals, levees, and water control structures are designed and operated to provide flood damage reduction, recreational benefits improve and restore the environmental health and function of the basin’s watershed. Through the Corps use of water management and water conservation areas; we enhance fish and wildlife habitat through the re-establishment of marshes.
