Oceanside, N.Y., Nov. 18, 2012 -- Electricians, carpenters and plumbers from the local union inspect homes in Oceanside, NY, as part of the new FEMA STEP program (Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power) for Hurricane Sandy survivors. When safe and practicable, this program may enable families to remain in, or return to, their homes, as a form of shelter while permanent repairs are completed, thereby reducing the number of individuals in congregate shelters or in the Transitional Shelter Assistance Program. FEMA is working with many partners including federal, state, local and tribal governments, voluntary faith-based and community-based organizations along with the private sector to assist residents impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
