The US Navy (USN) Ticonderoga Class Guided Missile Cruiser USS VICKSBURG (CG 69) fires a high explosive control variable round, visible to the right of the barrel, from an MK 45 5-inch/54-caliber (lightweight) gun during a live fire exercise on the Persian Gulf. The MK 45 5-inch/54-caliber (lightweight) gun provides surface combatants accurate naval gunfire against fast, highly maneuverable surface targets, air threats and shore targets during amphibious operations. The VICKSBURG is part of the Kennedy Carrier Strike Group (CSG), currently on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF)
