U.S. Soldiers assigned to U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) and Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF) stand in formation prior to the official opening ceremony of Exercise Orient Shield 2017 at Camp Shin-Yokotsuka, Sept. 11, 2017. Exercise Orient Shield is an annual, bilateral exercise cosponsored by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and U.S. Army Pacific. The exercise is designed to enhance Japan-U.S. combat readiness and interoperability at the battalion level while strengthening bilateral relationships and demonstrating U.S. resolve to support the security interests of friends and allies in the region.
