Hurricane/Tropical Storm - Plaquemines Parish, La. , March 20, 2009 -- A 15ft storm surge and 9ft residual floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina damaged the interior of the building. Winds from the hurricane caused the water tower located next the auditorium to collapse and destroyed the entire roof as well as the interior of the auditorium. The roof needed to be replaced and the interior (including the wood flooring) needed to be gutted down to the brick shell and rebuilt. Photo by FEMA/Manuel Broussard.

Plaquemines Parish, La. , Aug. 6, 2012 -- Photo of the Plaquemines Parish Faculty Housing project which celebrated its opening on August 6, 2012. FEMA obligated $8 million to this project which replaced housing destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The project was elevated to comply with the new Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map elevation for the area, which is in south Plaquemines Parish. FEMA has obligated a total of $206 million to the Plaquemines Parish School Board to rebuild its schools following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike.

Hurricane/Tropical Storm - Plaquemines Parish, La. , August 29, 2008 -- A 25 foot storm surge from Hurricane Katrina wiped out the original Plaquemines Parish detention center and Sheriff's offices. It was a single story, 800-bed structure. It was declared 98% destroyed, making it eligible for replacement funding under FEMA's Public Assistance program.  The new detention center is being built back on the same 70-acre original site and will have the same inmate holding capacity, but is being built 18 feet above the ground. Hurricane/Tropical Storm - Plaquemines Parish, La. , April 1, 2009 --  Plaquemines Parish firefighters recently moved into two brand new fire stations--one in Port Sulphur, the other in Boothville. The fire stations and the firefighting equipment in Plaquemines Parish, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. FEMA grants provided Plaquemines Parish with the needed funding that made it possible to rebuild these fires stations and purchase nine new fire trucks to replace those destroyed. Winds from the hurricane caused the water tower located next the auditorium to collapse and destroyed the entire roof as well as the interior of the auditorium. Hurricane/Tropical Storm - Plaquemines Parish, La. , September 14, 2005 -- A 25 foot storm surge from Hurricane Katrina wiped out the original Plaquemines Parish detention center and Sheriff's offices. It was a single story, 800-bed structure. It was declared 98% destroyed, making it eligible for replacement funding under FEMA's Public Assistance program.  The new detention center is being built back on the same 70-acre original site and will have the same inmate holding capacity, but is being built 18 feet above the ground. Plaquemines Parish, La., April 1, 2009 -- Plaquemines Parish firefighters recently moved into two brand new fire stations--one in Port Sulphur, the other in Boothville. The fire stations and the firefighting equipment in Plaquemines Parish, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. FEMA grants provided Plaquemines Parish with the needed funding that made it possible to rebuild these fires stations and purchase nine new fire trucks to replace those destroyed. [Hurricane Katrina] Empire, LA, December 7, 2005 - Debris is collected and deposited at the Plaquemines Parish Debris Grinding Site.  A crane transfers the debris into the grinder where it is ground to one fourth of its original volume, sprayed with water to reduce airborne residue and travels out of the grinder by conveyor belt into a pile where it is bulldozed into a pit that can hold over 3 million cubic yards of material. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year. There are approximately 10 billion pages of textual records; 12 million maps, charts, and architectural and engineering drawings; 25 million still photographs and graphics; 24 million aerial photographs; 300,000 reels of motion picture film; 400,000 video and sound recordings; and 133 terabytes of electronic data. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
