STEP assists State, local and tribal governments in performing work and services essential to saving lives, protecting public health and safety, and protecting property. The program funds certain necessary and essential measures to help restore power, heat and hot water to primary residences that could regain power through necessary and essential repairs. Tornado - Joplin, Mo. , May 20, 2012 -- The steel cross of St. Mary's Catholic Church, one of the many structures in Joplin, Missouri that was destroyed by a deadly tornado that struck the city on May 22, 2011. The tornado killed 161 residents of Joplin, destroyed 25% of the town and generated $2. 2 billion in property damage. This steel cross is all that remains of the church, which was built in 1966 and dedicated on December 17, 1967. The cross is a powerful reminder of the strength and unity of Joplin.
