A soldier from B Co., 1ST Battalion, 17th Infantry crawls up hill with a M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) towards the village of Simpsonville during a live fire exercise in support of NORTHERN EDGE '98, an annual Joint Chiefs of STAFF winter exercise involving air and ground units of all services. In addition to the winter attire he is also wearing MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement Simulation) equipment on his body as well as on the helmet. The MILES receivers will beep when targeted by a weapon equipped with the MILES laser emitter, indicating a kill or wounding of the wearer
