Command Sgt. Maj. Ronald Riling, the U.S. Forces Command sergeant major, presents Staff Sgt. Loren Gernandt, a geospatial analyst who is representing XVIII Airborne Corps, with a Army Commendation Medal for participating during the award ceremony for the U.S. Forces Command Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year competition at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, July 29. Gernandt was named the U.S. Forces Command Non-commissioned Officer of the Year. The four-day competition pits eight Soldiers and eight NCOs against one another in order to determine the best of the best from active-duty, National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers under U.S. Forces Command.
