MGEN John S. Crosby, assistant deputy chief of staff, personnel, observes as soldiers in a temporary morgue at Gander Airport prepare caskets containing the remains of a member of the 3rd Bn., 502nd Inf., 101st Airborne Div., for transportation to Dover Air Force Base, Delaware. On December 12, 1985, 248 soldiers of the 3rd Battalion were killed in a plane crash at the airport. They were returning to the United States after participating in peacekeeping duty with the Multi-national Force and Observers in the Sinai Desert
