The commanding officer of the Seventh Fleet flagship, the amphibious command ship USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19), Captain Alan L. Heisig, is shown at his station on the bridge of his ship as the vessel sails off the eastern coast of Australia en route to Sydney for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea. This battle stopped the Japanese advance toward Australia and was the first battle in which forces from both sides delivered their attacks by aircraft only. Neither force saw the other warships except by air
